LASIK Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Care

LASIK Pre-Operative and Post-Operative Care in College Station, TX

Poor eyesight is a frustrating experience for anyone. Glasses and contacts are incredibly helpful, but they cannot replace great eyesight and are a constant source of annoyance and expense. For patients that would like to fix their vision problems, we recommend LASIK.

What is LASIK Surgery?

The refractive surgery that is most commonly used to correct vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatism, is LASIK. This laser surgery creates a very thin flap in the cornea that is folded back, allowing corneal tissue to be removed from the eye. The flap is laid back in place to cover the area where the tissue was removed, correcting the shape of the eye. For nearsightedness, LASIK is used to flatten the cornea that is too pointed or steep. With farsightedness, LASIK is used to steepen the flat cornea. With astigmatism, the irregular cornea shape is smoothed into a more normal shape for better vision. This outpatient procedure typically takes less than five minutes and is not typically reported as painful during or after the surgery.

Who Should Consider LASIK?

Patients that can consider LASIK must be at least 18 years of age. Some eye problems require the patient to be at least 21 years old before LASIK is recommended. LASIK candidates must have general overall health that means they are free from eye diseases, corneal abnormalities, scars or infections. Patients will not be able to wear contacts for two to four weeks before the consultation and surgery procedure, as contacts may change the shape of the cornea. You will also need to find a LASIK eye surgery procedure, like Urban Optics, that is trustworthy and experienced to do your consultation and procedure.

What Can I Expect After the LASIK Procedure?

Many of our TX patients find that their vision is markedly better immediately following surgery and are feeling fairly normal the day after the surgery. Patients with lower prescriptions may take slightly longer to notice results. Typically, we will release you 15-20 minutes after the surgery to go home. Many patients experience a mild burning or itching after the eye drops wear off, but we will caution you not to rub your eyes to avoid disturbing the surgery location and healing process.

How Will My Optometrist in College Station Help Me After Surgery?

Typically after the LASIK surgery, we will want to see you within 24-48 hours to ensure everything is healing smoothly. You may have some slight discomfort during the first few weeks following the procedure, similar to having an eyelash in your eye. We will want to ensure that you have the support and tips needed to keep your healing process smooth and fast. We recommend lubricating eye drops are used, as well as sunglasses when outside during the healing process. We will recommend you avoid contact sports, hot tubs and whirlpools for several months following the procedure.

We will also examine your eyes to determine if you need further care or a new prescription. Your eyes may take two to three months to fully heal and during that time, your vision may continue to improve. Severe prescriptions may take up to six months to heal and a very few numbers of cases (3-5%) may need a follow-up enhancement after the LASIK recovery time. We have seen our patients get amazing results and return with high praises for the LASIK procedure.
