Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?

Is LASIK Surgery Right For You?

Mar 14, 2019

If you rely on glasses or contact lenses to see correctly, you know how frustrating it can be at times. Putting in your contacts every morning or reaching for your glasses in the morning or the middle of the night can be annoying. Fortunately, there is a procedure that makes it possible to see correctly without glasses and contacts. It is called Lasik surgery, and it is a non-invasive laser treatment that can correct your refractive error. If you are considering Lasik, you should first find out if Lasik surgery is right for you.

Your Eyeglass Prescription Is a Factor

Certain prescription parameters would determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the procedure.

  • Nearsightedness: Up to -11.00

  • Farsightedness: Up to +5.00

  • Astigmatism: up to 5.00

If you have a prescription that doesn't fit within these parameters, you wouldn't be a good candidate. If you have a high refractive error but still fit in with the parameters, you can experience side effects such as halos around lights and nighttime glare.

Your Eyes Must Be Mature and Healthy

To be a good candidate for this procedure, your eyes need to be mature which occurs when you are 18-years-old. Your eyes must also be healthy and free of disease. Certain diseases of the eye such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration will all make you a poor candidate for the procedure. If you suffer from chronic dry eye syndrome, your symptoms could become worse if you get Lasik surgery. If your vision is not stable and you need a new prescription frequently, you wouldn't be a good candidate for the surgery.

You Must Be In Good Health

If you are pregnant or nursing, your eye doctor will recommend that you wait to have the procedure. There are also medical conditions that would make you a poor candidate. These include lupus, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and other auto-immune diseases.
